I am currently certified to teach Childhood and Special Education (Students with Disabilities) Grades 1-6 as well as Early Childhood and Special Education (Students with Disabilities) Birth-Grade 2. I finished my undergrad degree and graduated in May and have been applying for jobs EVERYWHERE! Jobs in the education field are few and far between especially in school districts. I have been working with an integrated preschool and childcare company for the past few months as a sub. I got offered a four week maternity coverage working as a preschool special education teacher and bit at the chance to do what I love. My time with my students is coming to an end and I have to be honest when I say how sad I am going to be when I leave them. I have fourteen students in my classroom, eight of them students with disabilities. I LOVED every minute I have had with all of my students and have truly found my passion and calling. I have always loved working in special education and I have always found a special connection to my students as I was a student with a disability. It has always been my dream to open and run my own preschool so for now I am more than happy to work with this integrated preschool program. I HAVE FOUND MY INNER EDUCATOR!!! Also, I just got offered and accepted a permanent position as a preschool special education teacher at a different center. Don't give up, I know this job market is tough but there are opportunities out there to do what we love.
During my undergraduate program and working as a substitute teaching assistant (now a substitute teacher) in a school district, I had placements across all elementary grade levels (Grades 1-6). While student teaching I worked as a special education teacher, grade 5 and a general education teacher, grade 1. Needless to say I loved all of my placements but something always seemed to be missing. I have found what was missing while working as a preschool special education teacher. I have finally found my true passion and calling, what I really love and want to do. I have tried out different grade levels in the past and never loved them as much as I have with preschool. My advice to any "new" teachers out there: Work all over whenever you can. Don't settle until you find your true passion and calling. When you do find the grade level/subject that you love to teach jump at any opportunity that comes your way in that area! (Especially if you have deferred undergraduate loans on top of graduate school loans like I do!!)
